Et Ailönj teelt – the island calls

oomramEt Ailönj teelt – the island calls This call was followed by 13 young North Frisians and North Schleswigans who came to the beautiful North Sea island Amrum for five days. We stayed in a hostel in the middle of the dunes just a few meters from the beach. One of our program points was an intensive bike tour with an islander who showed us the sights of his home island. At any attraction he gave us both competent, as well as interesting historical and cultural background infomation. Another highlight in those days was the 8km long walk in the Wadden Sea from Amrum to the neighboring island of Föhr. Throughout the walk our tour guide told us everything worth knowing about the world natural heritage. But the most important lesson he taught us was „Eyes open in the Wadden Sea“ and so we arrived with no losses nor serious injuries on Föhr. The North Schleswigans learned the Frisian sport, the so-called „Gibseln,“ and we played, under observation of amused tourists, some competitive games on the beach. Often we sat together, just talked and got to know each other better.

The spirits were high, thanks to the sunny weather, which made us for a moment forget everything apart from the island. This feeling was brought to perfection the last day, when all went swimming in the middle of the night and were able to see an amazing phenomenon, the phosphorescence of the sea. Around us, ther were bright and sparkling algaes and above us the starry sky. This made everyone take a deep breath and smile again, before we went back to the mainland the next day – back into everyday life.
